The Centronics connector features a plastic bar in the center of the connector body that holds the contact pins. The connector body is typically black or blue in color. Both male and female Centronics connectors are available, with male connectors having side latches that snap into tabs on female connectors. Female connectors feature slots to receive pins from male connectors.

Typically, Centronics connections consist of a 36-pin male or female connector at the printer or peripheral, a cable, and a 25-pin parallel port on the computer. These connectors utilize eight parallel data lines along with additional lines for reading status information and sending control signals.

The Centronics 36-pin connector is arranged in two rows of pins with 18 contacts each and is secured by bail locks. This connector is commonly used for parallel applications, particularly in printers, and is also referred to as an IEEE-1284 Type B connector.
